Slowing your opponents’ Attack Speed is a great way to reduce their damage. Fighters and marksmen, in particular, deal most of their damage through auto-attacks, so it’s crucial to slow them down.

But top laners and ADCs aren’t the only two types of champions you need to stop. Even AP champions like Sylas and Azir deal massive amounts of damage with their basic attacks.

And items that reduce Attack Speed are now needed more than ever.

But which items slow your opponent’s Attack Speed in LoL? And how do they work?

The Items That Slow Attack Speed in League of Legends

There’s only one item in League of Legends that slows your opponent’s Attack Speed – Frozen Heart. It’s a tank item that grants Armor, Ability Haste, and Mana.

Frozen Heart reduces the Attack Speed of all enemy champions within a 700 range radius, regardless of whether they’re hitting you or not.

+20 Ability Haste
+400 Mana
+80 Armor

UNIQUE – ROCK SOLID: Every incoming instance of post-mitigation basic damage is reduced by 7 (+ 3.5 per 1000 maximum health), maximum 40% reduction each.
UNIQUE – WINTER’S CARESS: Cripples the attack speed of nearby enemies by 20% (700 radius).

Frozen Heart is a very simple item. Once it’s in your inventory, it will always apply the cripple effect on all enemies within a 700 range of your champion. It doesn’t have a cooldown or a duration.

It will keep your opponent’s Attack Speed reduced by 20% as long as you’re around them.

Frozen Heart is mostly bought on champions such as Malphite, Rammus, and Ornn. Fighters sometimes purchase Frozen Heart, but only if the enemy has multiple marksmen.

But any time you have a problem dealing with auto-attacking champions, Frozen Heart is a good item to have.

Unfortunately, there aren’t other items in LoL that slow Attack Speed. In the past, both Warmog’s Armor and Randuin’s Omen used to reduce your opponent’s Attack Speed. But that’s not the case anymore.

Frozen Heart is the item that reduces Attack Speed in season 12 in League of Legends.

Does Slow in General Affect Attack Speed in LoL?

Many players make the mistake of confusing the slowing effects in LoL with the cripple effects. They’re 2 different forms of crowd control and don’t share the same effects.

When you slow someone’s Movement Speed, it’s simply called slow. But when you reduce his Attack Speed, it’s called Cripple. They’re 2 different things!

Slow effects don’t reduce Attack Speed in LoL. Abilities and items that apply a slow effect don’t apply cripple, except in certain cases such as Malphite’s E.

And if the item or ability doesn’t mention “cripple” anywhere in the tooltip, then it won’t reduce the Attack Speed from your enemy.

And so, purchasing slow resist items does nothing for the cripple effect, and you shouldn’t do it!

Champions’ Abilities That Slow Attack Speed in LoL

If you want to counter an ADC or a fighter in LoL, it’s always good to play one of these champions. They have an ability that reduces their enemy’s Attack Speed, so they don’t even need Frozen Heart.

Here they are:

FioraW – RiposteAll enemy champions hit by this ability are crippled by 50% for 2 seconds.
NasusW – WitherA point-click ability that cripples the target by 23.5 / 29.5 / 35.5 / 41.5 / 47.5% and applies a slow effect for double the amount of cripple. It lasts 5 seconds.
MalphiteE – Ground SlamAn AoE damaging ability that applies 30 / 35 / 40 / 45 / 50% cripple for 3 seconds.
MordekaiserR – Realm of DeathReduces all stats from the enemy champion by 10%, including Attack Speed. It lasts for 7 seconds.

There are many champions in League of Legends that can reduce your Movement Speed, but not too many that can slow down Attack Speed.

I’m not sure why Riot Games haven’t added more items that slow Attack Speed in LoL. The situation is pretty similar to items that increase your basic attack range.

There’s only Rapid Firecannon, and that’s it. But in the meta where auto-attacks deal so much damage on even AP champions, we definitely need more items like Frozen Heart!
