When you save an episode, your iPhone will automatically download it so you can listen offline. To turn off this option, go to Settings > Podcasts, then turn off Download When Saving.
Now, here are specific instructions for how to download podcasts from Apple Podcasts, specifically:
- Open the Podcasts app.
- Browse or search for a show, then tap it.
- Touch and hold the episode that you want to download.
- Tap Download Episode.
When you follow a podcast, the show’s newest episode automatically downloads to your device.
Reasons to Keep Played Episodes
The primary reason to keep podcasts on your phone is their educational and entertainment value. If you’re interested in a topic, say history, it’s worthwhile to hang onto all of your history podcasts. What if you really love history, but you’re having a bad day and just want to delete things from your phone? Instead of the impulse to get rid of your history podcasts, you could check in with yourself and remind yourself of how much you love the subject.
Another good reason to keep podcasts is that in the absence of something to do, they’re always around for you to listen to instantly. That’s the advantage of so much data on the web these days – it’s all at your fingertips.
Reasons to Delete Played Episodes
The top reason we recommend deleting podcasts? Storage. You can store your podcasts on the cloud, so you don’t have to keep them using up space on your phone. With cloud storage, you can always access podcast episodes remotely, but you don’t need to keep the actual files on your phone.
Another reason to delete podcasts is that if you’re sure you don’t need to access their particular educational or entertainment content, you might as well go ahead and get rid of them. Being decisive is generally a good thing, and deleting podcasts from your iPhone is no exception.
