Veigar has always been a special champion in League of Legends. Even though his abilities only deal magic damage, players have always been experimenting with different builds for him.
And one of the best playstyles that we have for Veigar is the full tank build!
What are the benefits of playing Veigar as a tank?
Simple – being unkillable!
Seriously, building only tank items on Veigar solves most of his problems. Instead of being a squishy little yordle, tank Veigar is a panzer that demolishes everybody.
All the extra Health, Armor, and Magic Resist make it almost impossible for you to slay him, so he annoys everyone too!
But is the tank Veigar build actually viable?
Is Veigar Tank Still a Viable Build?
Yes!
In fact, it might be even more viable than his regular full AP build. Why?
Well, Veigar has a few obvious weaknesses. First of all, he’s a short-ranged champion that can easily be kited. Second, his power in the early game stinks. And third, he is way too squishy!
So the tank build gives Veigar a few strengths too.
First, it makes Veigar extremely defensive, allowing him to play a lot more aggressively throughout the game.
Second, it lets him control the team fights by always being in the front and spamming his E.
And third, the tank build also deals a great amount of damage because Veigar still gets a lot of AP through his passive.
Although funny, another reason to play Veigar as a tank is that it tilts opponents so much!
And to be honest, I’ve seen people break their keyboards because of how mad they got when playing against an unkillable Veigar.
So if you want to give it a try, these are the runes and items to run on a tank Veigar!

- Demolish – helps you deal more damage to turrets so you can collect plates and get more gold.

Optional Runes
The great thing about playing Veigar as a tank is the fact that you can play any rune combination you want.
The rune page above is your standard tank Veigar build. But sometimes, all this defensiveness may not be really necessary. And you can rely on your items to make you tanky.
So what else can you pick?
Well, you can go with any regular keystone for Veigar. Here are the most common ones:
- Electrocute – burst damage early on.
- Dark Harvest – incredible late game scaling.
- Aftershock – makes you tanky when you stun an enemy.
- Unsealed Spellbook – gives you flexibility.
- Arcane Comet – offers decent poke.
As far as the other runes are concerned, none is really game-changing. Ultimate Hunter is a decent one to have if you’re running Electrocute or Dark Harvest as a keystone.
It significantly lowers the cooldown of Veigar’s R, so you might want to get it.
Now let’s discuss items!

Veigar Tank – Items
Here is the recommended full item build for tank Veigar:
- Turbo Chemtech – an amazing active that increases your Movement Speed by 40% and gives you all beneficial stats: Health, Armor, Magic Reist, and Ability Haste.
- Heartsteel – grants lots of bonus Health and makes you incredibly tanky.
- Dead Man’s Plate – passively increases your Movement Speed, empowers your auto-attacks, and applies slow to the target.
- Force of Nature – provides you with additional Movement Speed buffs and is extremely valuable against AP champions.
- Void Staff – amplifies your damage and makes sure that your bonus AP (from your passive) is good enough.
- Mercury’s Treads – gives you a bit of Magic Resist and Tenacity, allowing you to quickly exit crowd control.
You may be wondering: Why on Earth would I ever build Turbo Chemtech on Veigar? But think about it for a second.
What’s the biggest issue that Veigar has as a champion? He can’t always reach his enemies and trap them with his E – Event Horizon!
And why was Veigar so popular and so strong with his Glacial Augment build? It’s because he was able to always use his E effectively on the frozen targets.
Well, Turbo Chemtech works in a similar way.
It gives you a burst of Movement Speed so you can catch your opponents. It does have a 1:30 minutes cooldown, but it’s key for stunning people in crucial moments.
Combined with the MS bonuses from the rest of the items, Turbo Chemtech makes Veigar a very speedy champion. And it helps him use his E effectively throughout the game!

Optional Items
As with the runes, there are many more items that I would recommend for playing Veigar as a tank. And keep in mind that you don’t need to go full tank in each match.
In some games, you’ll be so tanky with only 3 items that it won’t be necessary to buy the 4th.
That said, here are a few great items to consider:
- Everfrost – a great offensive and defensive mythic item, recommended for hybrid AP/Tank build
- Zhonya’s Hourglass – saves you from a lot of nasty abilities.
- Abyssal Mask – gives you extra MR and makes your enemies take more damage.
- Frozen Heart – perfect for countering all AD teams.
- Gargoyle Stoneplate – makes you literally unkillable.
- Rabadon’s Deathcap – boosts your Ability Power.
How to Play Veigar as a Tank?
Once you try the Veigar tank build in your games, you’ll notice that it’s all about setting up the Event Horizons. And yes, this playstyle lowers the cooldown of your E significantly, so you can practically spam the ability.
But it’s much more than that!
This build is all about having freedom as a mage. And having freedom in League of Legends means being active around the map and influencing the game in your favor.
Veigar is a champion that deals a lot of damage, regardless of his items.
So the goal here is to bring Veigar to a point where he can one-shot squishy targets (ADCs), but still be tanky enough to not die by a one-shot in return!
And that’s why you should be a lot more aggressive as a Veigar tank. You don’t have to worry about getting caught as much and you can focus on actually winning.
Ganking and team fighting should be your priority, with farming being something you do in between!
Is Veigar Good as a Support Tank?
Yes!
The tank build for Veigar is much better for supporting than for solo carrying. It focuses way more on providing utility (stuns, slows, and tanking) than dealing damage.
But this doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t play him in the mid lane too.
However, the best time to play Veigar as a tank is when you already have multiple champions on your team that could deal damage.
As a support, tank Veigar is great for setting up team fights for the ADC. The efficiency of his E is amazing, so I totally recommend you to give it a shot!

You can either go for the hybrid option with both AP and tank items. Or you can go as a support, purchase all the defensive items, and become an unkillable tank!
But my main goal here is for you to have in League of Legends! And I hope you enjoyed this off-meta guide! GL&HF!
