After swords, axes are the most popular melee weapon in all fantasy, not just video games.
But when it comes to League of Legends, there are only 4 champions that wield axes on the battlefield. They are:
- Darius, the hand of Noxus
- Draven, the Glorious Executioner
- Sion, the Undead Champion
- Olaf, the Berserker
Of course, each of them has a unique axe that they wield in their own different way when they approach a battle. For instance, Darius is a melee champion and never throws his axe while all Draven does is throw axes left and right.
But let’s inspect each of these champions and their axes and see how significant their connection with their weapon really is.
Darius, the Hand of Noxus
Contrary to popular belief, Darius’ axe doesn’t have a name and it’s not unique in any real way. It’s of Noxian craftsmanship, likely made in the Ironspike Mountains (for you lore nerds), and it’s pretty durable and sharp. But there’s no real “specialty” in it.
The axe that Darius wields is sharp on both sides, with the blade on the front side being much larger than the one in the back. And in-game, Darius mainly swings his axe with the front side to deliver powerful blows, such as his Q and R abilities.
But the fact that Darius is one of the strongest warriors in the whole lore of Runeterra while wielding a non-special weapon is simply amazing!
Draven, the Glorious Executioner
Draven wields dual axes that also don’t have a name. The axes have a very unique design and as far as we know, Draven’s the only person in the whole Runeterra who owns a pair of them.
The way Draven utilizes his axes is by spinning them in his hands. And once he’s ready to execute a target, he hurls the axes one after the other until the enemy lies dead at his feet.
Anyone who’s ever played Draven knows how egocentric he is. He enjoys the fame and loves to stand out. His spinning axes perfectly capture that ambition by being a one-of-a-kind weapon suited for the best gladiator in Runeterra.

Sion, the Undead Champion
Sion is the third Noxian champion that utilizes axes to his advantage. The current axe he wields in League of Legends is sometimes referred to as “Chopper” but we aren’t sure whether that’s its official name or not.
In any case, Sion’s mighty axe is massive. It’s similarly shaped to Darius’ axe, but this one is more round. Sion uses it for every basic attack he performs, as well as his Q ability, Decimating Smash.
Judging from his enormous frame and brute force, Sion uses his axe to mostly crush enemies rather than cut them, as Darius does. But even so, he is a really cool champion to play if you love the melee-axe playstyle.
Olaf, the Berserker
The obvious inspiration for Olaf is the Vikings. And because of that, it’s not strange to see Olaf running around Summoner’s Rift, angry as hell and throwing his two one-handed axes left and right.
Seriously though, Olaf comes from Freljord and his two axes were once dipped in True Ice. For those of you who don’t know, True Ice is the magical “dark” ice that’s associated with Lissandra’s lore.
Other champions in League have weapons made out of True Ice as well. Some of them are Trundle and his club, Ashe and her bow, and Braum and his shield.
That’s why Olaf’s attacks are so powerful, both when he’s throwing them at his enemies and when he’s slashing everything in front of him with glorious fury!

Conclusion
It’d be really fun if Riot Games decides to add more axe-wielding champions in League of Legends besides these 4. Axes are definitely cool and I know for a fact that there are many players who’d enjoy playing another axe slasher on Summoner’s Rift.
But for now this is all we have.
