League of Legends has tons of champions. And the mid lane role is definitely the most diverse one when it comes to different champions and playstyles.

But one of the best ways to carry and win games in LoL is to play really easy, beginner-friendly champions that even new players can pilot.

Playing a simple and easy champion has many advantages. Not only can you master the mechanics very quickly, but once you do, you can focus all of your energy on the macro game instead of trying to figure out how your champion works.

This is a problem that many people can see in solo queue. When inexperienced players go for high-skill champions like Yasuo and Zoe, they often fail.

However, champions like Malzahar and Annie are very simple and everyone can do well on them, no matter the experience.

That’s because these picks don’t require too much in order to dominate the lane and late game team fights.

So if you’re really looking to double your LP and smurf a few divisions in League, I’d definitely advise you to go for these 15 best easy mid lane picks!

The 15 Best Mid Lane Picks for Beginners & New Players (with Builds and Counters)

15. Karma

Karma

Starting off with Karma, there are a few things I want to clear up.

Is Karma the strongest mid laner you can play? No. Is Karma the best mid lane pick for solo queue in LoL? Not at all.

However, Karma is a great mid lane pick for countering burst mages and assassins. She’s got great defensiveness thanks to her shied (E) which she can also cast on her allies. And this increases her chances of winning the early 2v2 skirmish with her jungler.

So, the reason why Karma works so well into aggressive mid lane picks is that they can’t really one-shot her. She’s especially good against melee mid laners such as Yasuo and Zed because she can constantly poke them with Q, shield herself, and control them with W.

Despite her being a support, Karma’s damage is surprisingly high. Depending on how well you’re doing, your empowered Q can sometimes take more than 50% of your enemy’s health. This is especially true when you’re up against squishy opponents.

One thing that might not convince you to play Karma is that she’s primarily a support. This means that she isn’t as strong of a mid laner as Syndra or Ahri even though she has great damage.

On the other hand, Karma’s damage mainly comes from her Q which is a skill shot. So if you aren’t comfortable with aiming skill shots or you simply don’t want to bother, I’d recommend checking some of the other picks on this list.

But if you like Karma and you want to try her out in the mid lane, scroll down to see the runes and items you’ll need!

14. Galio

Galio

Ever since Galio was reworked, he’s been one of my go-to picks when I’m trying to ramp up my LP. He’s a very good mid lane pick and he works particularly well in lower elos.

What makes Galio an extremely fun champion to play is his defensiveness. You can counter most assassins in the mid lane with Galio and dominate them in the laning phase. And they can never one-shot you!

Galio’s ability kit is relatively simple and you can understand it in under a minute. However, this champion is not always easy since both his Q and E are categorized as skill shots.

Galio’s Q is your main damaging ability during the laning phase. You use it to poke your lane opponent and wave clear. And if you combine it with Galio’s passive (empowered auto-attack), you can actually deal a lot of damage.

This champion also has a dash and a knock-up effect into one ability – E. Galio’s Justice Punch can be the perfect tool for setting up ganks for your jungler or simply running away from the enemy jungler.

Galio’s W is the perfect counter tool for mages. The passive gives you a magic shield while the spell itself can be used to Taunt an enemy.

And Galio’s R is almost a global ultimate in League of Legends. You can use it to stop a gank in the bot lane and to turn the tides of a losing team fight.

All in all, Galio is a fantastic mid lane pick that can do anything – tank, kite, deal damage, and gank. So, there’s no reason for you not to try him out!

13. Malphite

Malphite

One of the easiest off-meta champions that you can take in the mid lane is Malphite. He’s an extremely simple champion to pilot and he’s great at carrying games in low elo in League of Legends.

When it comes to the laning phase, expect to have a difficult time with Malphite. He isn’t the strongest champion early on because his whole design is based around his ultimate – Unstoppable Force.

One thing that helps Malphite early on in the mid lane is playing aggressively with Arcane Comet and Tear of the Goddess. If you have this keystone and item, you can spam Malphite’s Q all day long. This ability actually does great damage early on, so you want to abuse it to get more freedom from your lane opponent.

And once you reach level 6, carrying a game with Malphite is a piece of cake. Basically, every time you have your R available use it on your lane opponent. With the R > E > Q > W combo, you’re guaranteed to slay a squishy enemy champion from 100% HP.

In other words, Malphite’s R is literally “free gold” for you and your team. And of course, you’ll want to use it on as many enemies as possible in a team fight.

However, you can always use it on one opponent to quickly assassinate them and remove them from the fight. It’s perfect for setting up a gank for your jungler or simply ganking another lane.

On the other hand, Malphite is a pretty good pick against AD champions in League of Legends. His W grants him bonus armor, so you’ll be pretty good against champions like Yone or Talon.

That said, you should really give AP Malphite a shot in the mid lane!

12. Zyra

Zyra

Zyra is another support champion in League that makes an awesome mid laner if you’re willing to put in a bit of work. And if you aren’t familiar with this champion’s strengths, let me go quickly over them.

First of all, Zyra is a relatively simple champion. And even though she has a couple of skill shots in her ability kit, Zyra is regarded as an “easy-to-play” pick in LoL.

Zyra has consistent bursts and lots of damage throughout the game. Her basic combo with Electrocute takes over 30% HP of her target’s HP. And with Dark Harvest, Zyra can one-shot an enemy from 50% HP.

But the reason why Zyra is considered an easy champion is that her damage doesn’t always come from her active abilities.

Zyra is a champion with pets. She has plants/flowers that auto-attack enemies around (prioritizing champions), dealing magic damage in the process.

However, Zyra’s flowers count as abilities so they transfer all of your magic effects from your items. For example, Zyra’s plants burn enemies if you have Liandry’s Anguish and slow enemies if you have Rylai’s Crystal Scepter.

In other words, Zyra doesn’t necessarily need to hit an enemy champion in order to deal damage to them – her plants do that for her! This is a huge advantage in the mid lane, especially when you’re trying to play aggressively and poke your opponent.

Of course, if you manage to combo your abilities and hit your R, you’re going to obliterate your target in a matter of seconds!

In terms of matchups, Zyra doesn’t have too many favorable ones. Mages with longer range and slippery assassins can easily shut her down. But if you play to her strengths, you can definitely carry your team.

11. Teemo

Teemo

Back in the old days of League of Legends, people played Teemo in both mid and top lane. And even though he’s now a standard top lane pick, Teemo is still an AP mage/marksman that does well in the mid lane role.

Despite always being an off-meta pick, Teemo is a fantastic champion for solo queue. He has enough damage and mobility while also being a relatively safe pick into many matchups.

Teemo’s main strength is countering melee champions, especially those that auto-attack a lot. His Q applies a Blind effect to his target and does a lot of damage. But it can also be used as a poking tool in combination with the poison from E.

When it comes to dealing with enemy junglers, Teemo has his W to quickly escape the danger. This spell improves his movement speed and allows him to go in and out of combat. It’s also good for doing favorable trades with the lane opponent and dodging their damage.

Besides this, Teemo is a very fun champion to play. His damage comes mostly through his auto-attacks. And that’s why you have multiple ways of playing this champion – AP Teemo, AD Teemo, auto-attack speed Teemo, and even on-hit Teemo!

But even if you’ve never played Teemo seriously, he’s also a good pick to just chill in LoL. Once you get to level 6, you can start planting shrooms around Summoner’s Rift.

And watching your enemies as they step on your shrooms is a delight for you but torture for the enemy team.

So here are the runes and items I recommend for playing Teemo in the mid lane!

10. Lissandra

Lissandra

In the 10th place, we have Lissandra. And to be honest, I don’t recommend Lissandra for the absolute beginners and new players in League of Legends

However, you can definitely make Lissandra an easy mid lane pick if you want to. And it all depends on the playstyle I recommend for solo queue!

Basically, Lissandra has a game-breaking button – her R. This is a point-click stun that does great damage and enables Lissandra to burst down a target, eliminating it from the team fight.

So the way you want to play Lissandra is to always lock down one target in a fight. This means that using Flash or your E to get in range to the enemy ADC or mid laner is something you should often do.

When you ult someone with Lissandra, your entire team will turn their focus on the frozen target. This is basically “free gold” for them, and it’s similar to how people play around Malzahar’s R.

Crowd control is one of the most powerful strategies for climbing in solo queue in League of Legends, especially as a new player.

On the other hand, Lissandra can freeze herself with Frozen Tomb to deal AoE damage and heal herself. When you self-cast this spell it works similar to Zhonya’s Hourglass and it allows you to dodge your opponent’s damage and outplay the enemy team.

In lane, Lissandra is a super-strong control mage. She has all the necessary tools for dominating the laning phase – from poke damage to combo burst and CC.

So, definitely give Lissandra a chance and see for yourself how safe this pick can be!

9. Cho’Gath

Cho'Gath

Cho’Gath is another top laner that fits surprisingly well in the mid lane. He’s got a unique set of strengths that allow him to dominate nearly any mid matchup, so let’s talk about it.

First of all, Cho’Gath has two crowd control effects on a very short cooldown – Q and W.

His Q is an AoE knock-up which Cho can use to poke his lane opponents all day long. And his W is an AoE silence that does a lot of damage and counters most champions in the game, especially mages.

Combined together, these two abilities allow Cho’Gath to control the flow of the laning phase. It doesn’t matter which champion stands on the opposite side of the lane, Cho’Gath will still be able to beat them if he makes good use of his Q and W.

Aside from that, Cho’Gath has an amazing sustain in lane thanks to his passive. This effect can be easily exploited when you activate Cho’s E and start slaying all minions in front of you.

But the strongest tool that Cho’Gath has for carrying from the mid lane is his R – Feast. With Feast, Cho’Gath can execute enemy champions and collect stacks. Each stack gives him bonus HP, so the more enemies you take down the stronger you become.

The great thing about Cho’Gath’s ultimate is that it’s a point-click spell and you only need to be close enough to your target in order to execute them. The game tells you when you have enough damage to do this, so you’re all set.

Cho’s biggest weakness in the mid lane is long-ranged champions such as Xerath. He doesn’t have any mobility and he struggles to chase after enemies that are far away.

However, people often make the mistake of getting too close to Cho’Gath in solo queue, especially in lower elos. So, take advantage of that and dominate them!

8. Seraphine

Seraphine

When Seraphine first came out, a lot of players gave her a try in the mid lane. And even though she later became a standard pick in the bot lane, Seraphine is still great at carrying games from mid.

I have a full game on Seraphine on my YouTube channel where I grab an easy win against Talon while smurfing. So check the link if you want to understand Seraphine’s strengths a bit better.

But basically, Seraphine is an incredibly safe pick for mid lane. She has an enormous shield/heal on her W that allows her to counter most ganks during the early game.

On top of that, both of her damaging abilities, Q and E, are long-ranged spells. This means that you can use them from afar and not let your lane opponent harass you while farming.

One thing you’ll find out on Seraphine is that once you get to level 5 you’ll start to delete minion waves. You can do this by hitting a regular E across the wave and then double Q. This guarantees that you’ll push your lane opponent and be free to roam or help your jungler.

As a bonus, Sera’s abilities have a low cost of mana, so you can basically spam them. But this is especially true if you pick up Tear of the Goddess early on.

And lastly, Seraphine’s ultimate is one of the easiest and most broken abilities in League of Legends. It’s a long-ranged charm that extends if it passes through enemy or allied champions. It does an okay amount of damage, but certainly nothing serious.

However, Seraphine’s R is super-useful for late game team fights. If you charm more than 2 opponents it’s very likely that you’ll win the fight and secure the objective.

There aren’t too many difficult matchups for Sera in the mid lane because she isn’t really a 1v1 pick. The idea is to have a safe laning phase and become very useful for your team in the mid and late game.

But here are the best and worst matchups for Seraphine’s mid.

7. Lux

Lux

Lux is one of the most iconic mid laners in League. Lately, though, she’s become more of a support pick, but her ability to carry from mid lane has never really extinguished.

Lux has three key strengths that make her an exception pick for solo queue – burst damage, crowd control, and safety.

First of all, we all know how much damage Lux can do, especially if she gets ahead. Her Q > E > R combo can obliterate most enemies on Summoner’s Rift and one-shot squishy carries.

Moreover, Lux’s damage comes entirely from long range. She’s a perfect champion for poking and setting up kills for her team without having to venture deep into danger.

Second, Lux has two abilities that apply crowd control effects to her target. Her Q is a snare that can trap up to two targets. And her E applies a slow effect that can last for several seconds, depending on when Lux activates the spell.

I already mentioned how powerful CC can be for climbing in solo queue. But when you combine Lux’s CC with the amount of damage she can do, you get a super-powerful combination for carrying games.

And lastly, Lux’s safety is also well-known among the LoL player base. Besides the long range of her abilities, she also has a shield on her W that allows her to block a bit of damage. True, you max out this ability last, but it’s still useful throughout the game.

That’s why Lux is one of the best mid lane champions for beginners and new players in LoL! And if you want to learn how to play her, these are the things you need to know about Lux.

6. Anivia

Anivia

I put Anivia in 6th place for a very good reason. Truthfully, Anivia is one of the most powerful champions in League of Legends in terms of damage and raw power.

However, Anivia’s playstyle can sometimes be tricky for beginners and new players because it’s a bit unique. Yes, Anivia is a relatively simple champion, but the way she’s designed isn’t really similar to any other pick in the game.

For starters, Anivia doesn’t have a big-hitting ultimate ability the way most mages do. Instead, Anivia’s R is an AoE toggle effect that slows everyone inside and deals tons of damage each second.

Anivia’s R is a very useful tool because it allows you to clear minion waves just by activating it. It allows you to quickly push your opponent and roam free to the bot or top lane for ganks.

On the other hand, Anivia’s W is a wall that blocks a certain area and prevents enemies from passing through. It doesn’t do any damage and it can take you a bit of time to get used to it as well as learn how to actually take advantage of it.

Anivia’s Q is a long-ranged bolt that also stuns the target. And her E does bonus damage if it’s used against a frozen enemy. So, always use E after Q or R!

Despite her “weird” champion design, Anivia is godlike tier for solo queue! And if you put a bit of time into practicing and mastering her abilities, you’re going to be unstoppable.

So, I really recommend Anivia if you’re looking to climb in LoL and you’re willing to do a bit of extra work!

5. Twisted Fate

Twisted Fate

Twisted Fate is one of my main champions in League of Legends. He’s also among my three most played champions, so I have a lot of Twisted Fate tips to offer you.

However, I want to start by saying that you don’t want to main TF because of his damage. There are tons of other champions in LoL that do more damage than Twisted Fate and that have better design.

But Twisted Fate has a unique playstyle that’s perfect for solo queue. He’s exceptional at ganking, roaming, and helping teammates around the map with stuns. And he’s called “The Prince of Solo Queue.”

There are three things you should know if you’ve never tried out Twisted Fate – Q allows you to farm safely from range, the gold card from your W is the main card, and your R is the best ganking ability in League.

Because Twisted Fate’s Q has such a long range, you don’t always need get in auto-attack range during the laning phase. And against champions like Irelia, it’s better to stay safe and farm under turret.

When it comes to the cards, I have an entire guide on how Twisted Fate’s cards and damage work. But basically, you should know that the blue one does the most damage, the red one is good for farming, and the gold one is perfect for ganking.

Twisted Fate’s R – Destiny is a powerful tool for counterplay. For example, you can counter-gank the enemy jungler when he’s trying to take down your bot laners.

However, you can use TF’s ultimate for all sorts of reasons. It’s a global ultimate that reveals everyone on the map and allows you to make a good decision for your next move. From ganking to helping your jungler and even checking if the enemy team is doing dragon/Baron.

You can do so much with Twisted Fate once you get to know him!

4. Veigar

Veigar

Veigar is one of the oldest mid laners in League of Legends. But despite that, he’s still one of the best champions to climb with in solo queue.

But there’s a reason why Veigar is always recommended by high elo and professional players for climbing and improving at the game – he’s a simple but powerful champion!

Veigar has everything you really need for dominating your opponents in every game – explosive damage, extreme scaling, and crowd control.

When it comes to dealing damage, Veigar can one-shot his target with just a bit of AP which he can get through his passive (stacks). Veigar’s R is a point-click ability that can take over 50% of the enemy’s HP bar. So even if you miss his Q and W (skill shots), you can still deal damage!

Because of this, using Veigar’s ultimate is usually referred to as “pressing the win button.”

Each game of Veigar starts of slowly. During the laning phase you’re mostly focused on farming and stacking up bonus ability power with your Q. Occasionally, you’ll poke your lane opponent with W and get more AP that way.

But once you get level 6, you can start looking for kills either in your lane or anywhere on Summoner’s Rift. Veigar can always execute enemy champions with R if he gets them to 30% HP or less, so don’t be afraid to gank.

And for ganking, Veigar has one of the strongest tools in the game – his E cage. This ability allows Veigar to trap opponents and stun them if they touch the walls of the cage. And if he stuns them, he can often one-shot them!

If you’re interested giving Veigar a shot, here I have my 10 best tips for climbing in solo queue with Veigar. Make sure to check them out!

3. Brand

Brand

Brand was also once a mid laner that dominated the role before “more complicated” champions were added to the game. And if you’re looking for a pick that will always have enough damage to decimate the entire enemy team, Brand is your guy!

So Brand’s strongest point as a champion is his damage. All of his abilities are damage dealers, they’re all magic damage, and have good AP ratios.

Brand’s spells synergize with each other in a unique way. For example, if Brand uses his E on the target before he hits them with Q, the Q will actually stun the target. Another combo is to first use W and then spread the fire with E in a wide area.

However, the central part of Brand’s damage is his passive. Brand’s passive – Ablaze allows him to set enemies on fire and deal over-time damage to them. And if he hits the same target three times, the target will then explode with AoE damage.

Both the burn damage and the explosion also scale with the target’s maximum HP. This simply means that Brand can always do great amounts of damage, even if he’s behind and even if his targets are all tanks.

Additionally, Brand’s build includes burn items such as Liandry’s Anguish and Demonic Embrace. So when you combine everything together, you get

But that’s not the only reason why Brand is among the best beginner mid laners in LoL. It’s actually the fact that his damage is really easy to do.

What do I mean by this?

All Brand really needs to do in a team fight is to press R. His ultimate spreads to nearby enemy champions and can easily apply his passive. His passive also spreads on other enemies if the affected target explodes near his allies.

So, your job is really easy with Brand!

2. Annie

Annie

When LoL players talk about easy mid lane picks for climbing, Annie is one of the first champions they usually mention. And she’s often the first champion recommended for new players in the mid lane role.

Now, if you have no experience with mages or mid lane in League, Annie is really one of the best champions to learn the role with. She is the complete package and doesn’t lack anything!

For starters, Annie has a really easy playstyle. During the laning phase, you can last-hit the minions with Q and practice farming that way. But Annie is also good at trading because of the Q > W > AA Electrocute combo.

On top of that, Annie has a shield that only blocks damage but also damages the attacking champions. And it can be a good counter to a lot of AD mid laners such as Yone, Yasuo, and even Zed.

But Annie also has a game-changing ultimate – Tibbers! Her ultimate allows her to spawn her pet Tibbers which does a lot of initial damage and even more burn damage later. And if Annie combines her R with her passive, Tibbers will also stun her targets.

Stunning two or more enemy champions with Tibbers in a team fight usually means a win for Annie and her team. This is because Annie can quickly burst all of them down and her team can follow up the initiative with their damage.

All in all, Annie offers a really safe and strong playstyle that can give you a lot of free LP.

I have an entire guide dedicated to how to play Annie successfully, so make sure to check that out if you’re ready to become an Annie player.

1. Malzahar

The Best Mid Laners for Beginners and New Players in League of Legends - Malzahar

And in the 1st place, we have Malzahar. This is the easiest and the most powerful champion you can play in solo queue as a beginner, especially in low elo.

Malzahar has everything you need for carrying a game as a mid laner and as long as you play to his strengths, you’re going to climb the ladder in LoL!

First of all, let me say that I love Malzahar and that I even play him in Master elo. He’s my go-to pick when I’m trying to get increase my LP but also when I simply want to chill on Summoner’s Rift.

And the reason why Malzahar offers the most relaxing way of climbing in League is that his two main damaging spells are point-click abilities! There are no skill shots and nothing to miss!

Malzahar’s E is the DoT he spreads on multiple targets. It refreshes with each Q, but you can also reapply it since its cooldown is very short.

And Malzahar’s R is a suppression effect that lasts for 2.5 seconds. During this time, Malzahar’s target is immobile and unable to do anything.

Besides these two, Malzahar has his Q to silence his enemies and deny them freedom. His W allows him to spawn pets that deal tons of damage if his target has already E on them.

But in reality, all Malzahar needs to do in League is to press R. Once his target is suppressed, Malzahar’s whole team turns on that target to finish them off. So, each use of Malzahar’s ultimate is actually a “free kill.”

Malzahar is also great at farming minions and it can help you improve your CS game. Simply press E and W on the minion wave and you’ll likely get all the gold from it (E jumps to another target if the affected one dies before the duration expires).

So, Malzahar is the best easy mid laner in LoL for climbing as a beginner/new player!

And if you’re serious about climbing in LoL, I urge you to try all 15 picks when you get the chance. When you’re first starting out with this game, you don’t really know which playstyle suits you. So the more you experiment the quicker you’ll figure out the best way you can climb.

I hope that my comments helped you figure out what each champion is all about. But I also recommend you to check some of my individual guides and posts where I talk about each champion in particular.

And for that, you can search the Guides & Builds page for League of Legends on Runetarium.

Good luck and have fun!
